Fire fatality

Investigators work at the scene of a fatal fire at a home at 2408 NE Monroe St. Thursday. A neighbor, Robert Halverson, came out of his house about 6:15 a.m. to get his newspaper and saw flames through the window of the house across the street and called 911. A heavily secured front door initially prevented firefighters from entering the house and forced them to quell the fire from the front window.

Reversing a trend from the last ten years, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that more adults are smoking than in years past. Jay Waree of Peoria, taking a smoke break inside Discount Tobacco, 4325 N Sheridan Road, said that he figured that the economy and people losing their jobs could easily explain the uptick. Waree said, "To me, it's a bad thing, but people develop new habits...when times are like this."
