Operation Sandtrap

  • More than a year in the making, 2,100 golf clubs and more than 4 tons of golf balls donated by area golfers are now headed on their way to U.S. troops serving in the Middle East as Dr. Frank Benningfield and Bill Ott, the owner of Illini Golf Headquarters and a crew of family and volunteers box up the donated items to be shipped out Wednesday by DHL. DHL, the worldwide express carrier, has agreed to ship 10 large containers to the U.S. Naval base in Norfolk, Va. From there, the Navy's Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Division will ship them out to the troops. Dubbed Operation Sandtrap in reference to a veteran who joked with Ott that his sand play had improved while stationed in Iraq, the project has ballooned into something that both men never dreamed of.

Aaron Schock, R-Peoria, is sworn to that office Monday night at Aaron Schock's campaign office in Peoria Heights to fill in the 10 remaining days in his term in the Illinois house as he resigns Monday to assume his U.S. congressional seat. Krupa, who said she had hoped she would fill the position for longer than the 10 day term, said that there was very important work that needed attention immediately.
