- More than a year in the making, 2,100 golf clubs and more than 4 tons of golf balls donated by area golfers are now headed on their way to U.S. troops serving in the Middle East as Dr. Frank Benningfield and Bill Ott, the owner of Illini Golf Headquarters and a crew of family and volunteers box up the donated items to be shipped out Wednesday by DHL. DHL, the worldwide express carrier, has agreed to ship 10 large containers to the U.S. Naval base in Norfolk, Va. From there, the Navy's Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Division will ship them out to the troops. Dubbed Operation Sandtrap in reference to a veteran who joked with Ott that his sand play had improved while stationed in Iraq, the project has ballooned into something that both men never dreamed of.
