Fire fatality

Investigators work at the scene of a fatal fire at a home at 2408 NE Monroe St. Thursday. A neighbor, Robert Halverson, came out of his house about 6:15 a.m. to get his newspaper and saw flames through the window of the house across the street and called 911. A heavily secured front door initially prevented firefighters from entering the house and forced them to quell the fire from the front window.

Jay Waree of Peoria, taking a smoke break inside Discount Tobacco, 4325 N Sheridan Road, said that he figured that the economy and people losing their jobs could easily explain the uptick. Waree said, "To me, it's a bad thing, but people develop new habits...when times are like this."

Pumpkin farmer John Ackerman walks through a neighbor's waterlogged pumpkin field Tuesday afternoon while discussing the difficulties of this year's harvest. Ackerman's own 33-acre field of processing pumpkins, which is not near a paved road, was unaccessible do to muddy conditions. Though yields were good this year, heavy rains have make it difficult of Libby to get their equipment into the fields to harvest. The company announced Tuesday that there will likely be a pumpkin shortage later this year.
